SF IN PROGRESS

growing together

San Franciso is going through

an acute housing shortage

In 1940, the average price of a home in California was 20% higher than the US average.

Today, it is 150%higher.

Last year, San Francisco allowed 193 new homes to be built

for every 1,000 new residents.

The Bay Area is growing

And suburban sprawl costs the US $1 trillion a year.

SF in Progress is a community-based project that strives to create a transparent view of housing production in the Bay Area. By providing open community insight into housing regulations and upcoming housing proposals, users are informed and empowered to weigh in on planning issues affecting the state of housing in their neighborhoods and advocate for their needs.

Community Dialogue

The community has a whole suffers when housing is not being created to meet demand. All income levels are squeezed. The diversity and long-term vitality of the entire community suffers. By viewing the opinions of fellow community members in our map based application, users across communities can empathize and see how their choices directly impact others.

Transparant Process

The housing development process is extremely obtuse and convoluted. Though community meetings are required, there is no convenient way for the working community to be aware of the occurrence of these meetings or even submit their opinion. By making the process transparent, the community can see the stumbling blocks and pain points that prevent adequate housing from being created for market need and advocate for change.

Improved, informed, housing options

Individuals are empowered to create change in their communities when they are informed of the often obtuse process civic government and housing development organizations use to be granted land use and obtain building permits. Once informed, the public is empowered to view this process critically and understand how it impacts their own access to housing.

User-friendly, data-driven tools

Convenience makes activism possible in a persistent and effective way. We aim to create tools that will inform users of the building and land use issues in their given vicinities and link them to dates of upcoming civic housing proposal votes, and town halls.
